| Abstract: | The supply chain management system (SCM) has become one of the most dominant trends in the industry. Most companies have spent a great deal of money on implementing computerized SCM (CSCM) systems but have not been able to get hold of the secret of success in implementing it effectively. It was discovered that most studies on traditional supply chain management failed to provide a complete framework for planning and implementing a CSCM system. Most recent studies focused only on specific research areas such as implementation strategies, business process re-engineering and enterprise resources planning (ERP) systems but little research had been done on the study of developing the planning and implementing framework for a CSCM system.In this research, a planning and implementing framework is introduced that consists of planning, implementation and evaluation phases of a CSCM system. This study investigated how companies in Hong Kong deal with the processes of planning and implementing CSCM systems. In the second part of this research, case studies were conducted in two listed companies (Cafe de Coral Holdings Limites - 'CDC' amd Johnson Electric Holdings Limited - 'JE') in Hong Kong. The first shows how the company is managing its CSCM system by using this proposed framework. The second case study in JE is a supplement to the first case in further validating the implementation process of the proposed three-phased planning and implementation framework of CSCM system. This illustrates that both companies studies have adopted the approach recommended in the proposed framework. At the final parts of the research, conclusions were drawn on some critial implementation issues and summarized as a reference to business practitioners. |
