RCDs for lighting circuitsen_US
This paper has examined the nuisance tripping problems of RCD in public lighting system. The public lighting system, electric shock protection and hazard of tripping in lighting system have been all studied. The RCD is required to be installed in public lighting system because of the safety provision and government requirement. However, mal-operation of RCD was discovered by Company A under inclement weather conditions. A site investigation has been carried out at Kam Sheung Road in New Territories West in order to find out the major RCD tripping factors. Cable insulation, current leakage, harmonic, earth fault loop impedance and lightning injection have been fully inspected. The results of each measurement have been studied. Having analysing the results, cable insulation, current leakage and earth fault loop impedance have fulfilled the COP EMSD requirements and the system is protected satisfactorily. The design of lighting poles is successful to avoid the lightning strike to interrupt the normal operation of the system. The harmonic has exceeded the suggested COP EMSD value but does not force RCD to trip. The results of laboratory experiment has shown that the leakage current from ballast are increased at humidity condition. As the various moisture content in rainy day could influence the proper operation of lighting system, a proposed site investigation under inclement weather is included to reveal the RCD tripping factors.en_US
