Abstract: This research investigates the integration of GIS and BIM for indoor emergency response. The merits of two types of technologies, GIS and BIM are firstly analysed in the context of indoor emergency response. GIS has the advantages of the spatial analysis such as network analysis, while BIM has the advantages of indoor 3D modelling and dynamic simulation. This research then investigates the important aspects of integrating GIS and BIM,such as the data exchange between GIS and BIM. Taking the indoor fire evacuation for example, this research develops a new best-path finding algorithm with dynamic constraints and applied it to the application of fire evacuation planning and simulation based on the integrated platform of GIS and BIM. This dissertation sets the sixth floor of block Z in Hong Kong Polytechnic University(PolyU) as the test site. Based on the proposed developments, evacuation plans considering dynamic constraints are generated assuming there is a fire accident inside the building. The evacuation is also simulated using a 3D video based on BIM software. Through the simulation results, people can get better guidance and make right decisions if real indoor accident happens. This research provides an endeavour of integrating GIS and BIM for a particular application of indoor emergency response. The developed methods and results will be helpful for future development of GIS and BIM integrated solutions in various applications.
