Influences of network, network capability and strategy on performance of small hotels : a comparative study between new and old hotelsen_US
The purpose of this study was to investigate the linkage among network, network capability, competitive strategy and hotel performance. This study focused on the investigation of small hotels in Taiwan. This study re-affirmed a network composition measurement scale for hotel use, and empirically examined whether networks were important for small hotels when focusing on certain competitive strategy and their influences on hotel performance. Therefore, objectives of the study were to 1) explore the composition or mix of network that small hotels embedded with during their business development ; 2) investigate the effects of network composition on the adoption of competitive strategy by small hotel firms; 3) identify the linkages among the network composition, strategy, and performance of small hotel firms; 4) examine the role of network capability among the relationship of networks, competitive strategy and performance of small hotel firms;and 5)examined the differences between new and old hotels in terms of previous four objectives. This study employed a quantitative method of study. A total of 117 cases of small hotels was analyzed and results were reported. Study results revealed that network was not important in all of the competitive strategies. Owner/manager network was only influential on marketing and cost leadership strategies. Institution network was important to uniqueness and cost leadership strategy. Supplier network appeared to be the most important to all strategies except cost leadership strategy. Results suggested that small hotels should focus on maintaining their customers when a differentiation strategy was focused. In terms of the influence of network on hotel performance, owner/manager network was important for small hotels and new hotels, and institution network was important for performance of old hotels. The interaction effect of network capability-network composition was not significant for competitive strategy. Study results suggested that network capability did not leverage the effect of the network on hotel performance but help forming a new network or network composition for small hotels. Finally, study results supported that competitive strategy influenced the performance of hotels.en_US
