| Abstract: | In the last four decades, people are increasingly travelling to and interacting with environments in natural protected areas. The planning and development of effective and efficient visitor management strategies in sustainable tourism is critical to mitigate visitor behavior and environmental impacts. The purpose of this research is to investigate the application of mobile learning (mLearning) for environmental interpretation and transformative learning experiences within the context of conservation and sustainable tourism development. The research will include research themes within the domains of (1) sustainable tourism and visitor management strategies, (2) interpretation and transformative learning, and (3) mobile learning and smartphone applications. The research site selected is the Singapore Botanic Gardens. A conceptual framework for assessing the effectiveness and efficiency of mLearning applications in environmental interpretation and sustainable transformative learning is proposed. Empirical data collected from the study comparing the effectiveness and efficiency of mobile-driven interpretive experiences vis-a-vis traditional interpretive (static and guided) programs are also presented and discussed. With the enormous uptake of mobile broadband subscription and innovations in mobile technology and applications, there are wide-ranging opportunities for its development in free-choice learning and mindful visitor experiences. If effectively implemented, such interpretive programs and mLearning applications can serve to transform visitor perceptions, behavior and future intentions towards conservation advocacy and environmental protection. |
