The role of social entrepreneurial competence in resource acquisition in social entrepreisesen_US
Social enterprises have both social and economic goals. The ambiguity of a dual organizational identity gives social enterprises unique characteristics that are valuable for study. Social entrepreneurship is similar to commercial entrepreneurship in terms of the scarcity of resources involved, which makes resource acquisition an important issue for social enterprises. Scholars have suggested that resource acquisition for social entrepreneurship is distinct from that in the commercial sector and must be investigated in a specific context. In this study, I consider how social entrepreneurial competence (SEC) facilitates resource acquisition in social enterprises. I focus on three types of SEC, venturing skills, social adaptability and expressiveness, and examine their role in social enterprises' acquisition of both human and financial capital.Based on data collected from qualitative interviews and a quantitative survey of top executives from a group of 73 social enterprises in Hong Kong, I find that venturing skills are positively related to the acquisition of human and financial capital. However, I find social adaptability and expressiveness to have negative relationship towards resource acquisition. Implications for academics and practitioners are discussed.en_US
