Abstract: With development of people's living standard, the demand for energy becomes increasingly urgent. Given the limitation of the traditional power generation, the clean renewable energy resources used as distributed generation are becoming more and more popular. Relatively, the technology for how to utilize the new energy economically gets increasingly concerned. However, when interconnecting DGs to the distribution system, islanding detection is needed in case that the distribution network is supplied by a generator isolated from the main utility supply. The consequence of islanding can be grave. Therefore, islanding detection becomes part of the focus and calls for great concern. Although there have been numerous studies and researches on islanding detection, the methods, which have been put into practice, still have kinds of drawbacks respectively. Therefore, the optimizations for existing detections or the innovations on novel methods should be carried on. There are many approaches for islanding detection. Based on different principles, the detection methods are divided into two categories - passive and active ones. This thesis reviews the existing islanding detections and compares the pros and cons of them through simulations. The results show that the NDZ for passive methods and the influence of the injected disturbance in active methods could not be removed. All efforts taken only can be used to optimize them. The directions for optimization and combination on how to overcome their disadvantages, together with detailed analysis are presented. The improvements are carried out in order to remove the NDZ and reduce the influence of the injected disturbance. The step-by-step optimization for AFD from these 2 aspects is stated in detail in the thesis. However, the negative influence caused by injection in AFD could not be eliminated. Aiming at the drawbacks remained after all the efforts, a novel islanding detection is defined and detailed study and simulation results are presented at the end of the thesis. The simulations verify that the novel method satisfies all the requirements as a perfect islanding detection and owns a broad application prospect.
