dcterms.abstractWith the high development of economy and growth of population nowadays, the energy crisis and environment pollution are among the major problems confronting the future of automotive industry. How to save energy and protect environment has become a serious topic all over the world. It is a highlight to research the working processes in internal combustion (IC) engine. The main objective of the project is to investigate numerically the spray and combustion characteristics of diesel with oxygenated fuel additives in order to explore the potential merit of oxygenated fuels in soot reduction. In addition, the investigation may also demonstrate that the oxygenated fuel could improve the fuel economy and reform burning process. The method of numerical simulation can effectively predict the performance of IC-engine and partially replace the engine experiment. In this project, KIVA-3V, an open-source CFD code, was adopted to simulate the in-cylinder processes of a type ISUZU-4HF1 diesel engine, with emphasis on investigating various engine performance parameters, such as pressure, temperature, heat release rate and emission. Besides, liquid DME (dimethyl ether) was selected as the alternative oxygenated fuel for the diesel engine for studying its spray-atomization and combustion-emission characteristics. The simulation results suggest that DME has the potential to become the environmental friendly alternative energy and it merits future studies.en_US
