dcterms.abstract | Improving outdoor thermal comfort is necessary for residents. Even in the hot summer people cannot always stay in air-conditioned room. Outdoor activities are human's psychological and physiological needs. Studies in outdoor thermal comfort include many cases which are different from the indoor thermal comfort studies. When people are in the outside space, outdoor thermal comfort evaluation may be affected by various meteorological parameters, including solar radiation, air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and clothing thermal resistance and human physiology and activities. The climate in Hong Kong is very hot and humid for nearly half the year, and especially in summer, high temperature and humidity make it impossible to stay in outdoor space for a long time. Therefore thermal comfort demand of people should be considered thoroughly to improve the outdoor thermal comfort and make better use of the outdoor space in daily life. This dissertation takes the objective physical environmental thermal comfort as the main part of the research, combined with subjective questionnaire method, and aims to reveal the relationship between high-rise buildings in Hong Kong and thermal comfort of Asian people by analyzing characteristic parameters of buildings and meteorological parameters. The results proved that different building configurations can make influence on the pedestrian level wind, and solar radiation will affect the thermal comfort as well. Three representative sites at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University main campus were selected for field measurement and questionnaire study of thermal perception of human body to find out whether the thermal comfort is appropriate in a cloudy day. And the results showed that an open place may be a better place for people in Hong Kong to get comfortable experience in cloudy days. This finding can help to urban planners in understanding more on Asian people's need of thermal comfort in hot and humid sub-tropical areas. | en_US |
