| Abstract: | Dreaming in a fantasy world where dragons could be slayed or meeting our Prince Charming for a happy ever after is what everyone has done in some part of their lives. Fairy tales allow us to get away from the real world and live in our own Utopia. In away or two, it also shaped our ideologies when we were young. Folklorists suggested that fairy tales have a powerful infuence on the world we are living. Disney, as a prominent figure in popular culture, santinized fairy tales in a more approachable presentation for the mass. Its portrayal of women soon becomes asetstandard of ideal women in the society. With its high penetration in the market, Disney has contributed a lot in shaping our stereotypes towards gender positions (Anggard 2005, England 2011), which was also referred as disneyfication in some studies (Sayers 1965; Vardalos 2011 & Darcy 2004). In this study, we will study how Disney portrayed women and shaped our ideologies. Its significance to our modern world will also be discussed. |
