dcterms.abstractVery few people expected that Donald Trump can have so much success in the election cycle so far. He has even already become the presumptive nominee of the Republican Party despite his controversial comments towards various issues and people. Having a totally different background, gender and professionalism, one of his major competitors Hillary Clinton tends to adopt a different communication style. Therefore, it is interesting to see how they gain support and establish relationship with Americans in a linguistic perspective. Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton's presidential candidacy announcement speech are studied in this research since all presidential announcement speeches share similar purposes such as announcing presidential candidacy and declaring ideas to manage the country. In this study, interpersonal metafunction of systemic function grammar developed my M. A. K. Halliday is adopted as the analytical framework. The use of Mood, modality, adjunct, personal pronoun and interpersonal metaphor in the speeches are investigated in order to figure out the strategies that Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton used to establish and maintain a relationship with the audience.en_US
