dcterms.abstract | The present corpus-based study explores the two sub-genres of blogs, self-initiated posts and sponsored posts, by analysing their common lexical items with Sinclair's (2004) model of description of the lexical item, comprising five categories of co-selection. There are two obligatory categories, the core and semantic prosody, and three optional ones, collocation, colligation and semantic preference. The study examines a collection of self-initiated posts and sponsored posts by five popular British bloggers. The findings show that the extended units of meaning of the common lexical items across self-initiated and sponsored posts are not identical. The difference in extended units of meaning of a lexical item in two corpora is not realised by the core, collocation, and colligation, but mainly by the distinct patterns of semantic preference and semantic prosody. The semantic preference of lexical items in the two genres are found to be useful in revealing the communicative purposes of self-initiated posts and sponsored posts, and the discovery of the recurring patterns of semantic preference in sponsored posts also provide insight into the generic features that are unique to sponsored posts. | en_US |
