| dcterms.abstract | This study analyzes the use of a special type of unspecific noun, which is shell noun (Hunston & Francis, 1999; Schmid, 2000).These shell nouns are widely used as cohesive devices in academic writing of published articles writers. This study explores the use of seven shell nouns selected from Hinkel's (2004) and their patterns in the corpus of published research articles to create textual cohesion.Both quantitative and qualitative methodology is employed in the study to explore the frequency, the pattern and the function in the corpus of published research articles. The results of this study indicates that published articles writers have a tendency to use shell noun to create cohesion within or across clauses. | en_US |
