dc.title | A study of the critical success factors of quality management in the civil construction industry | en_US |
dcterms.abstract | Much of the civil construction industry exhibits high business dynamics since construction projects are usually associated with high variance and uncertainty in operation. Quality and safety requirements are constantly evolving because market conditions with respect to material and human resources are changing frequently. Therefore, management excellence across all the dimensions, i.e., quality management, is critical to business success in the industry. Few researchers have studied the factors contributing to the success of quality management in the civil construction industry. With a view to filling this gap, this study aims to answer the following two research questions: What are the critical success factors of quality management in the civil construction industry? What are the relationships, if any, between the critical success factors of quality management and organizational performance measures pertinent to the civil construction industry? The two questions are answered on the basis of empirical data on quality management and organizational performance at the firm level as collected through a survey of 450 professional civil construction companies in Hong Kong. The data are analyzed through a combination of exploratory factor analysis and multiple regression analysis of valid responses from the respondents. Based on the data analysis, it is found that there are four critical success factors of quality management in the civil construction industry: effective measurement, leadership, competent site operating personnel, and customer focus. This study finds that three critical success factors of quality management, i.e. (i) leadership, (ii) competent site operating personnel, and (iii) customer focus, are positively associated with the four pertinent organizational performance measures, i.e. (i) safety, health, environment performance, (ii) site operating personnel performance, (iii) process performance, and (iv) marketing performance. Two of the critical success factors of quality management, i.e. leadership and customer focus, are determined to be of prominence. The results indicate that, in order to gain competitive advantage in this industry, companies should constantly pursue excellence in quality management. In addition, a case study of a leading civil construction company in Hong Kong, the Kum Shing Group, which was the recipient of the Gold Award of the Hong Kong Management Association Quality Award in 2013, is conducted to validate the empirical results by examining its quality management practices and how they lead to superior organizational performance in the civil construction industry. | en_US |
