Scattering of sound by the balcony in an auditoriumen_US
Numerous concert halls and theatres were designed for multi-purpose use and built with balconies for maximizing the space use. Meanwhile, objective and subjective evaluations on acoustical properties of performance halls had been done. In the present study, measurements have been done in a multipurpose performance auditorium. Dual channel dummy head and sound level meter were used as the receiver to measure impulse response and sound pressure level while an omnidirectional sound source and room acoustics measurement software DIRAC were used for MLS production and calculating. Measurement points were located throughout the main floor and balcony in the auditorium. It can be found the scattering of sound by the balcony does exist and mainly affect the audience on the front stall and the acoustical parameters are different between binaural and monaural. In addition, the sound field of the front stall, back stall and balcony seating area is different because of the existence of the balcony overhang.en_US
