Abstract: | This simulation study is based on a railway control system that embraces the typical electronics systems for a practical railway. The design of the integrated data network adopted was presented in a logical manner. The context of the Railway Control Data Network(RCDN) was defined and requirements outlined in Chapter 1, the design of the FDDI network, theory behind and configuration were then presented in Chapter 2, followed by the network architecture and other practical design considerations in Chapter 3. To put all the design into prototype simulation, a total of four models were developed. This includes i) FDDI WAN, ii) Station FDDI LAN, iii) WAN FDDI interconnected by T1 link and finally iv) FDDI WAN ring wrap as covered in Chapter 4. Lastly, Chapter 5 presents the analysis and conclusion. The results confirm that the safety bandwidth margin exceeds 40Mbps and the delays caused by T1 link exceed the tolerance acceptable. This implies that data reconfiguration is required to reduce the amount of data to be transferred during fallback operation. The simulation is proved to be useful to facilitate the understanding of the network behaviour in a probabilistic data traffic environment which is not possible for an analytical computation. |
