Abstract: With a rapid increase in the use of home electrical appliances, such as personal computers and telephones. People gradually realize that lightning can damage building indoor low-voltage distribution systems and household appliances. A unique software called EMTP is used in this study to simulate different working conditions, such as evaluating some situations when people and electronic devices are in an isolated house which is struck by direct and indirect lightning, investigating different lightning protection schemes, and examining whether SPD could protect the people and electrical equipment. In this study, using EMTP to simulate the results of different values of lightning over-voltage and over-currenton the indoor low-voltage distribution system, and the effects of the lightning strike on the building indoor low-voltage distribution system in different positions. Simulating different protection schemes, because of the difference of reactive voltage of surge protective device (SPD), as well as the different contact models of people and household appliances. The simulation results of EMTP software provide a statistical distribution of lightning over-voltages in low-voltage distribution system. The results of simulation models showed that an appropriate SPD could protect household appliances and people in an isolated house which is struck by direct and indirect lightning. The method of a SDP installation can reduce the current value through human body and electrical appliances. Furthermore, the most effective lightning protection method is to install an appropriate SPD in front of the building indoor low voltage distribution system. Lastly, in rainy days, people should maintain a safety distance of over 1 meter from the electrical appliances, wear rubber shoes and do not use mobile phones that are being charged.
