dcterms.abstract | Patient with familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) have marked increase in the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Interleukin-6 (IL-6) and high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) are sensitive and specific markers of inflammation, which is an important underlying factor in the development of atherosclerosis and CVD. The aim of this study was to investigate the potential anti-inflammatory effect of the drug probucol in the treatment of FH. Probucol has been suggested to have antioxidant and anti-inflamamtory effects and to offer potential benefit as an adjunct treatment to standard therapy of FH by statins. The study evaluated the effect of 24 weeks of probucol treatment on the plasma concentration of selected inflammatory markers (IL-6 and hs-CRP) in 20 FH patients on stable statin treatment. Fasting blood samples were collected at baseline, after 12 weeks and 24 weeks of probucol treatment, and IL-6 and hsCRP were measured using specific immunoassay methods. The results showed no significant differences between IL-6 (2.08 versus 2.12 pg/ml, p=0.983) or hsCRP (1.62 versus 2.99 mg/l, p=0.067) before and after 12-weeks of probucol treatment. Moreover, plasma IL-6(2.03 versus 1.73 pg/ml) and hsCRP (1.61 versus 2.17 mg/l) were not significantly different from baseline after 24 weeks of probucol treatment. In conclusion, up to 24 weeks probucol therapy had no significant effect on plasma IL-6 and hsCRP levels in these FH patients. | en_US |
