dcterms.abstractThe enormous growth of number of hotels in Mainland China during the last two decades had brought two challenges: high staff turnover and the drop in service quality. The objective of this study is to explore the turnover reasons of sales people working in upper up-scale hotels in China, and to provide hotels and hotels' owners practical implications and guidelines, so that strategic actions can be formulated to minimize the dysfunctional staff turnover that is extremely costly. A qualitative approach is adapted and in-depth interview with sales leaders in China are conducted. The findings show leadership is the key reason for the high staff turnover. The other key reason for high sales staff turnover is owner's heavy interference and involvement in the operation of the hotels, which is unique in China.en_US
