| dcterms.abstract | This dissertation provides the readers a knowledge of Data Centers with strategic planning, design, technologies, and disaster recovery and business continuity. Furthermore, it involves the current best practices for operating and managing a Data Center efficiently and effectively. This dissertation is designed to cover following 7 chapters. In Chapter 1, it provides some key elements in planning and design Data Centers. It consists of Data Center definition, vision, roadmap and strategic planning and global location planning. In Chapter 2, there is an overview of the cabinet, server rack, network, and large frame platform respectively. Besides, it explains the requirements for the design of computer room with coordination of HVAC system, power distribution, fire detection, protection system, and lighting. Furthermore, it will address the modular design and space planning. In Chapter 3, it describes the fundamentals of virtualization, cloud, SDN, and SDDC respectively. There are some benefits and challenges of the technologies to Data Center practitioners. Green Microprocessor and Server Design focus on how to judge and select them as the best fit to sustainable Data Centers. Besides, there are some principles to help the selection of network devices and servers. In Chapter 4, it introduces the background of the network technology. Then, the fundamentals of networking protocol (OSPF, BGP, and MPLS), would be discussed. Besides, the technology of Traffic Engineering (TE) would be explained. In Chapter 5, Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM) will be introduced. It is about the convergence of IT and building facilities functions in a Data Center. The objective of a DCIM approach is to provide administrators with a complete view of the utilization. In Chapter 6, there is a case study of the Great East Japan Earthquake. Natural disasters to the physical infrastructure could be devastating many Data Centers like tsunami and earthquake. Therefore, it is vital to obtain a strategy for disaster recovery (DR) and business continuity (BC). We will be prepared well for the inevitable if we learn more from past experience and augment BC and DR. In Chapter 7, the future of Data Center would be the topic. Data centers were considered the reliability preference rather than energy efficiency. In recent years, as they consumed a vast amount of energy, they are gaining social interest for energy policy regulations of the government. As a result, the effort is going to increase the energy efficiency in various perspectives. | en_US |
