Analysis of linear induction motor (LIM) application in railway vehiclesen_US
LIM is an asynchronous AC linear motor that works by the same general principles as rotary induction motors but is designed to produce motion in a straight line. Characteristically, linear induction motors have a finite primary or secondary length, whereas in rotary induction motors they are arranged in an endless loop. LIM Transportation system origins from Bombardier Innovia Metro in 1985, and there are several successful types of vehicle in utilizing LIM propulsion system since 1980s, such as Bombardier Advanced Rapid Transit (ART) system, as well as Kawasaki LIM train. The former is widely used in Vancouver Sky Train and Beijing Airport Express while the latter is mainly adopted by "Mini-subway" in Japan and Guangzhou Metro (Lines 4, 5 and Line 6). This dissertation mainly discusses about the main structure, operation principle and application in railway system of linear induction motor. By contrasting with conventional rotary induction motor drive, analyzing pros and cons of LIM traction system and then proposing its relevant improvement and further developing trend.en_US
