dc.title | Simultaneous partial nitrification, anammox and denitrification (SNAD) and simultaneous partial nitrification and denitrification (SND) treating landfill leachates | en_US |
dcterms.abstract | Partial nitrification and ANNAMOX at low Dissolved Oxygen level are new methods investigated on nitrogen removal of landfill leachate that contain high concentration of ammonium and low carbon to nitrogen ratio. The partial nitrification and ANNAMOX save more energy, and higher efficiency removal of total nitrogen and COD in contrast to traditional nitrification-denitrification treatment. In addition, the sludge retention time and settle time are faster than that of conventional biological method. In the project, SNAD SBRs are applied to treat raw and dilute (after air stripping) landfill leachates, respectively in order to investigate the efficiency of organic carbon and ammonium removal. The treatments are easily affected by parameters: pH, temperature, COD concentration and Dissolved Oxygen concentration. If either one of the parameters could not provide favourable condition to partial nitrification and ANNAMOX, full nitrification would perform and ANNAMOX would stop processing. In addition, denitrification was inhibited to process. Although the partial nitrification could not processing at the first month operation, the energy consumed by the set-up still less than the traditional nitrification-denitrification method, which had similar total nitrogen removal efficiency, 15%. Therefore, the partial nitrification had proved that is beneficial to use on nitrogen removal instead of conventional method. Furthermore, the performance of the reactor gradually processed similar to the hypothesis made after adding ANNAMOX and changing the DO concentration. The nitrate concentration was decreased and nitrite concentration increase as Nitrifying Oxidizing Bacteria started to be inhibited at lower Dissolved Oxygen concentration. In addition, denitrification process might be activated as the Dissolved Oxygen level decreased. Therefore, longer operation is needed for the performances of the reactions become stable. | en_US |
