Abstract: | This dissertation presents an investigation into structural responses of S690 steel materials under low cycle high strain cyclic loads. Before determining the structural responses of these steel materials, six standard static tensile tests were carried out in accordance with BS EN ISO 6892-1. After reviewing codes of practice in different countries, the results of these tensile tests were verified by the requirements provided in EN 1993-1-12 to establish adequacy of mechanical properties of the steel materials. A new test method as proposed by Ho et al. was adopted to carry out low cycle high strain cyclic tests to determine the hysteretic behavior of the steel materials. An investigation into the hysteretic behavior of S690 steel materials was conducted and 24 specimens were tested. All of these specimens were shaped to be geometrically same, and were tested under various loading protocols with cyclic loads under different straining rates and strain levels. Hysteresis loops and backbone curves were obtained according to the results of the cyclic tests. Based on data analysis of the loops and the backbone curves, important findings are obtained by comparing the results of different loading protocols. It was found that changes in loading cyclic frequencies, i.e. from 0.1 to 2.0 Hz, have little effects on the shapes of the curves of hysteresis loops up to strain levels at 10%. However, fracture of the test specimens is often critical at a strain beyond 10%. |
