|Abstract:||Due to the safety requirement of engineering projects, the precision of the total consolidation settlement calculation is required during the engineering design stage. A variety of models ranging from simple elastic models to Elastic Visco-Plastic (EVP) models has been proposed to study soil behaviour. In this paper, some constitutive models presented in the past will be reviewed and compared. Then consolidation settlements of soils with the consideration of construction time under different loading types will be discussed. Different methods will be applied to calculate the consolidation settlements with a selected soil profile from the Berthierville Embankment for one soil layer and double soil layers under different loading types. The accuracy and verification of the new simplified method is examined by the comparison of results from finite element program, Hypothesis A method, old simplified B method, the new method with US Navy method and Zhu and Yin method for double layers. In the case of a single soil layer, the relative error in the calculated total consolidation settlements using the new simplified B method is within 0.73% when compared with corresponding results from finite element analysis, in all the cases with different loading time and loading types, whereas curves from Hypothesis A method and old simplified B method have relative errors up to 18.45% and 2.73% respectively. In the case of double layers, the relative errors in total consolidation settlements with results from the new simplified B method with Zhu and Yin method for range from Uv 2.35% to 4.37% in different loading types whereas curves formed by the Hypothesis A method with US Navy method and new simplified B method with US Navy method have relative errors up to 18.97% and 4.53% respectively. The relative errors of consolidation settlements within half of construction time are rather high, for all the calculation methods being considered. Generally, among the calculation methods examined, the new simplified B method with Zhu and Yin method for Uv is recommended to be used to calculate consolidation settlement of soils with creep with consideration of construction time and loading type.|
