Fire safety management in tall buildings in the context of Hong Kong : a study on block Z of the Hong Kong Polytechnic Universityen_US
With the rapid development of the economics in Hong Kong, there were big construction projects with new architectural design in the past three decades. However much of them, particularly those with green or sustainable architectural features have difficulties in complying with prescriptive fire codes due to many reasons, those are allowed to determine fire safety provisions by performance-based design [1]. So the fire safety management plays an important role in controlling the fire risks and protecting the users' and their property. In this paper, the study focuses on the fire safety management of the Block Z of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. The research objectives were to study the local building fire safety design by reviewing the local and overseas fire codes; with the Block Z as an example, to analyzed the fire detection systems, the fire fighting systems (including the fire hydrant and fire hose reel system, the fire sprinkler system, fire extinguishers, the staircase pressurization system, fire doors), evacuation routes. Besides, a questionnaire survey was conducted to find out users' satisfaction and their fire safety knowledge. Based on the data obtained, it was found that the implementation of fire safety management was insufficient in Block Z of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. In the end, some recommendations were given.en_US
