Effect of household characteristics on residential solid waste generation in Hong Kongen_US
Waste management is one of the most challenging issues for the Hong Kong government, therefore it is important to develop a better waste management plan to reduce waste generation. Identification of relevant influencing factors on waste quantity is essential for developing a waste management plan. A number of studies suggested that waste generation rate has strong correlation with socio-economic status of households. Hence, the aim of this project is to investigate the relation of household characteristics with respect to the residential solid waste generation for Hong Kong urban community. 10 volunteers were invited to this project. The results indicate that there is significant difference in the waste generation rate between public housing and private housing as determined by one-way ANOVA (p=0.02, F=6.89), and it is concluded that households in public housing would have higher waste generation (mean=229.5g/person/day) compared to households at private housing (mean=163.9g/person/day). A number of variables that demonstrated potential on affecting waste generation rate are also recommended for future larger scale studies.en_US
