In this study, we investigate the relationship between aesthetic appreciation and individual creativity. Creativity has been intensively studied over the past few decades, but its relationship to aesthetic appreciation and the mechanism that underlies this relationship have not yet drawn much attention. We propose that an individual's aesthetic appreciation is related to his or her creativity. We also propose that divergent thinking and cognitive flexibility mediate the relationship between aesthetic appreciation and individual creativity. In addition, the moderating effect of intrinsic motivation in scientific research on the indirect effects of aesthetic appreciation and creativity via divergent thinking and cognitive flexibility is examined using data collected from hard scientific scholars in mainland China. The theoretical and practical applications are discussed.en_US
