Abstract: In this information age today, with the development of the industry our demand for communication is growing. Computers and mobile terminals such as smart phones and tablets are upgrading in an amazing speed, multimedia data service is also playing an important role in our daily life. They both have high requirements for the speed and quality of the communication system and optical fiber communication can meet all these requirements. Short-reach communication is the communication between data centers and the transmission distance is typically less than eighty kilometers. The amount of data to process and transmit is huge so a higher-speed and larger capacity communication system is demanded. To improve the capacity a variety of multiplexing techniques are proposed, one of them is polarization multiplexing. Recently a direct detection polarization multiplexed short-reach optical communication system has been put forward. In this system, at the transmitter signal and carrier are placed on orthogonal polarizations. At the receiver, three parameters of signal's Stokes vector are detected, two of them are the real and imaginary part of the transmitted signal, combining these two parts the signal can be fully recovered, not only the intensity but also the phase. However, noise, chromatic dispersion and polarization state change in the fiber will affect the system performance. Therefore after receiving the signal we apply synchronization, polarization rotation and equalization to eliminate these influences. Comparing to normal direct detection systems this system is more robust against chromatic dispersion. Moreover 2nd order nonlinearity has little impact on it; frequency gap is not required so the system can achieve a higher spectral efficiency. In this dissertation, we simulate this direct detection polarization multiplexed short-reach optical communication system in VPI and analysis its performance by combining VPI and Matlab. The transmitted signal is 16-QAM OFDM signal and the data rate is 82.45 Gb/s. After transmission over 80 km standard single mode fiber this system shows its good BER performance as well as potential in higher data rates and longer transmission distance. Additionally, the system structure is simple so it has a low cost. From all these advantages we can see its bright future in high-speed optical fiber communication.
