Abstract: | The uses of plates and plate like structures in modern technology is well known, such as reinforced concrete floor slabs, pile caps, transfer plates and raft foundations, etc. Engineers always need to predict the deflection and stress of the elastic plate. Finite element method (FEM) is currently the most powerful and versatile numerical technique for the solution of such problem. Many plate elements have been developed and are used in commercial FEM software. However, some unacceptable results from some popular elements are discovered in the past by the project supervisor. In order to overcome the problems, a new shear deformable plate element 'PLATE' has been developed. A range of mesh of varying densities, element sizes, and thickness-to-plate length ratios are used to test the performance of currently popular elements and the new element PLATE. Some problem of currently popular elements has been found. And the high accuracy of 'PLATE' has been demonstrated. Serviceability of each element studied in this dissertation is discussed and illustrated. |
