Abstract: Based on the wind pressure measurement wind tunnel test results of the rigid rectangular building models with some openings on its facades, the effect of several variables including opening ratios, opening dimensions and vertical and horizontal positions of openings on the mean and fluctuating force coefficients in both along-wind and cross-wind directions are studied. The results indicate that the effect of opening on the absolute value of the mean drag and lift force coefficients is not significant while the opening causes greater variations of the value of the fluctuating drag and lift coefficients especially when shorter side of building faces the flow, although the drag and lift force coefficients would slightly vary with the increase of the opening ratio linearly to some extent. Particularly, a no-wall side opening located at the lower or upper level of the facade can increase the fluctuating lift coefficients by approximately up to 60% at the attack angle of 90° while for side opening models the most unfavorable angle for decreasing the lift force fluctuations is 270°. Besides, an opening located at the upper height may exert great effect on the fluctuating lift coefficients, which should be considered when the sky garden on high floor is designed for the high-rise building. In contrast, the model with an opening at the mid-level has the better performance in reducing the force fluctuations along the cross-wind direction when it is placed at the angle of 90° or 270°. The measurement results provide a useful reference for the determination of wind load on structural components and claddings of high-rise buildings with openings.
