Abstract: As strong earthquakes occur frequently around the world, bridges play an irreplaceable role on the function of national defense, disaster relief and reconstruction during the earthquake. Since the twentieth century, bridge seismic has design attracted more and made attention from the countries around the world. Many experts and scholars make their contribution to bridge seismic technology research which promote the bridge seismic technology development, bridge seismic theory has also been constantly developed. To provide some references to the establishment of Hong Kong Bridge Seismic Deign Code, the objective of this study is to conduct a comparative study based on a review of the different bridge seismic design codes in China, Europe, and America, and discuss their difference, pros and cons, in the aspects including: (1) the code system; (2) the hazard defined by different fortification criterion; (3) the primary principle of bridge seismic design and the generally design procedure; (4) the bridge classification in different code and the importance factor provided by various codes; (5) the soil type determined by different standard; (6) the seismic response spectrum used in different countries; (7) the determination of earthquake force and the load effect combination; and (8) the detailing design provided by each code. Then modeling the bridge system, after the procedure of bridge reinforcement design according to different seismic codes and concrete design codes in each country, the response of bridge in elastic-plastic phase can be analyzed under different specifications of different design rare earthquake force. The differences of ductile response of components can be configured.
