dc.title | The application of a new simplified hypothesis B method for calculating settlements of clayey soils with creep | en_US |
dcterms.abstract | The time-dependent stress-strain behavior of soil is a great concern to geotechnical engineers for relevant projects. Yin and Feng proposed a new simplified Hypothesis B method for single-layered soils and double-layered soils to calculate the consolidation settlement for different stress-strain states under the instant loading. However, few real cases were applied by this new simplified Hypothesis B method to check its accuracy. At first, the new simplified Hypothesis B method is applied into the Berthierville Embankment to calculate the ground settlement. The measured settlement reported by Kabbaj et al. (1988) is adopted to verify the fully coupled finite element simulation using the EVP model and the calculated results from this new simplified Hypothesis B method. It is found that relative errors fluctuated in the range of 0.244% to 2.660% with a correction factor α=0.8. For the single-layered soils with vertical drains, Yin and Feng proposed a method but there is no cases were used to check the accuracy. Singapore reclaimed project is adopted to calculate the settlement by using the new simplified Hypothesis B method. The relative errors of results are in the range of 2.474% to 3.778% compared with FE model and 0.164% to 1.566% for measured data. The correction factor used in the calculation is 0.8. For the double-layered soil, Feng and Yin considered the time-dependent loading. But in practice, there are many projects with vertical drains, and hence, Tang and Onitsuka's method was adopted to calculated the Wenzhou airport. The calculated settlement of the new simplified Hypothesis B method and the results of finite element simulation are compared to evaluate the accuracy. It is found that the results from the new simplified Hypothesis B method adopting Tang and Onitsuka's method are generally in good agreement with results from FE simulation with a correction factor 0.688. The relative errors are in the range of 0.087% to 2.155%. For measured data, the relative error of Tang and Onitsuka's method is within 1.801% and 3.251%. In the last chapter, main finding and conclusions of the study have summarized and listed. | en_US |
