Abstract: Nowadays, energy consumption inadequate and water shortage have become a serious global issue. Biological wastewater technology has been gradually widely regarded as the most energy efficiency treatment project. Among various water contaminations, nitrogen is one of the most general and urgent puzzle to be solved, as it is one of the key growing limit element for microorganisms. Once the waterbody is polluted by nitrogen, eutrophication will appear soon. Because it is the living limit source for microbes, complete nitrification and denitrification has been applied on-site decades. However, to solve energy consumption inadequate, Hong Kong creatively proposed sea water flushing. Whereas, the new problem arose: wastewater needed to be treated in wastewater treatment plant are strongly salty, highly ammonium abundant and poorly organic contained. Facing the comparatively extreme living conditions, anammox is considered as the most suitable nitrogen removal biological candidate. To meet the emission standard, anammox should be salinity domesticated and enriched first in the lab-scale reactors. Making sure the anammox accumulation progress, the concentration of nitrogen-species in influent and effluent were measured and the biomass was taken periodically to trace the microbial community dynamic change by doing the outsourced DNA sequencing. During the operation period, not only anammox but sulf-related microorganisms has been detected which is different from the classical anammox enrichment reactor. We envision that, this reactor will be a good chance to fill up the saline anammox research gaps.
