dcterms.abstractWhen people in a high-rise residential neighbourhood look out the window, they often find closely spaced tall buildings at proximity as obstructions to views. The negative feeling of being surrounded by tall buildings at proximity is known as oppressiveness, which have been the subject of investigation since the 1970s. However, very few studies have focused on the relationship between obstructing buildings and their distance from the observer who is located a dozen storeys above ground. There is also a lack of models examining both environmental and personal variables which may have mitigating effects on the perception of oppressiveness. Accordingly, this study aimed at developing a logistic model to predict the probability of invoking an oppressive response when exposed to scenes with 12 combinations of obstructing high-rises, a sky view between building gaps and greenery in the foreground. A laboratory experiment was performed on participants in sedentary position (N=48) who rated each scene presented as a window view on oppressiveness as well as restorative potentials of the scene attributes. The resulting ordered logit model showed that obstruction distance was inversely related to perceived oppressiveness which was also mitigated by sky view and greenery. Further, the model suggested that age and gender could exert influences on the maximum likelihoods of the oppressive response. The model also revealed that participants implicitly were willing to trade off approximately half the amount of sky view (ß=-1.704) or greenery (ß=-1.796) for extending the viewing distance (ß=-0.922) to 45m.en_US
