dc.title | Improving PolyU part-time MBA program to satisfy the management development needs of Hong Kong managers | en_US |
dcterms.abstract | There was a heated debate over the management development needs of Hong Kong managers. Some employers criticize for the incompetence of contemporary managers to cope with external environment. To plug the loophole, some organizations allocate a limited budget to develop their own managers to enhance their managerial competence but the effectiveness is questionable. As managers foresee their needs to confront the turbulent business environment, most of them attend management development courses to upgrade themselves in management theory and practice. For those internal courses organized by individual companies, some managers dissatisfied with the curriculum as they are not closely related to their jobs. In other words, the courses available can hardly satisfy their needs especially in the areas of self development, soft skill training and strategic planning. To narrow the gap of managers' expectation, courses offered by local universities are mostly welcome by young managers in the pursuit of management development training. Among the courses offered, MBA courses always receive fervent responses since they offer an academic qualification as well as professional training to program participants. The Hong Kong Polytechnic University is one of the local universities that offers part-time classroom teaching mode MBA course in Hong Kong. From my recent questionnaire survey, graduates have positive feedback on the general benefits gained from the program but some particular areas like, localized materials, teaching methods, soft skill development, are suggested to be strengthened for further improvement. By correlating graduates' comments and the management development needs of local managers, some fine tuning plans on skills development, effective teaching methods, academic collaboration and new subjects will be proposed to the University for consideration. By doing so, it is hoped that PolyU part-time MBA program will have further improvement to address the needs of local managers on management development policy. Furthermore, there will be a higher recognition of this program as academically sound and practically competent managers are produced. | en_US |
