Abstract: | Supertall buildings becoming the uptrend of the construction industry especially in Hong Kong where has the high density of population and buildings. Due to its high occupancy load with high asset value, protection with higher standards supposed to be equipped. The painful experience of World Trade Centre (WTC) raised the public awareness about its emergency evacuation system, the performance of its protection measures was criticized. Total evacuation is always the major concern for the supertall buildings regarding its various uniqueness features including the long egress distance and time etc. By understanding the necessity of the revolution of existing evacuation strategy in the supertall buildings and compare the requirement of residential and commercial buildings, the different elements of the evacuation strategy should be faced in different scenarios was studied. The participation of the elevator into the evacuation system would be the solution to the long egress time in the supertall buildings. In this research, we used some simulations available and empirical equations to study the performance of the evacuation system with elevator and analysed its feasibility. This purpose of the study is to understand the necessity of using elevator as part of evacuation system in supertall buildings and the concerns of using elevator for evacuation system. By investigating the aspects of fire safe elevator for evacuation and develop the related requirement for the systematic evacuation in supertall buildings, the fire safe elevators could be introduced into the evacuation system in the supertall buildings to increase the performance of emergency evacuation and tackle with the concerns of the existing evacuation strategy. The performance and accessibility of the fire safe elevators evacuation are increased by the incorporation with the collaborative system suggested and results shown with analysis in this thesis. |
