Abstract: This paper developed an experimental methodology to demonstrate the overall performance of eight selected air cleaners, including graft technology, carbon, plants, chlorine dioxide, car-type ions generator, spray, absorbent with carbon and personal ions generator. This study aimed to compare the performance of the air cleaners, to evaluate the efficiency of the air cleaners, and to indicate the secondary pollutions of the air cleaners. The experiments were carried out in a well-sealed glass chamber with a size of 0.28m x 0.65m x 0.38 m. The experimental method was separated into five parts: (1) simple model test, (2) TVOCs removal performance test, (3) HCHO removal performance test, (4) particles removal performance test, and (5) particulate matters removal performance test. In order to improve the indoor air quality, air cleaner was selected according to the properties of pollutants and the efficiency of removing the pollutants. Through the comparisons and analysis of the experimental results, the clean air delivery rate (CADR) was calculated and the overall performance of the air cleaners were arranged in descending order: personal ions generator, car-type ions generator, chlorine dioxide, carbon, plants, graft technology, absorbent with carbon, and spray. It was found that the personal ionizer could remove 77% of ≥0.3 μm particles in the chamber within 5 minutes with a CADR of 0.3174 m³/hour. Moreover, chlorine dioxide could remove 99% of formaldehydes in the chamber in 1 hour with a CADR of 0.3133 m³/hour. Although spray had the highest TVOCs CADR of 0.0212 m3/hour, high TVOCs emission was given. Besides, graft technology, absorbent with carbon and spray generated high concentration of TVOCs. In brief, ionizers, chlorine dioxide and carbon are recommended to enhance the indoor air quality.
