dc.title | A study on vertical flame spread in multi-storey buildings through various size of window | en_US |
dcterms.abstract | Vertical flame spread in multi-storey buildings through window is very common in different fire accidents. The cause of vertical flame spread can be a kind of failure in "compartmentalization". Compartmentalization is a very important concept in fire safety issue, aiming to limit the spread of fire by divide a structure into "fire compartments". However, in the past history, there are a lot of failures in compartmentalization. For example, a recent fire in London Grenfell Tower cause lots of deaths and casualties due to an uncontrollable fire spread started from an apartment. To prevent the same case happening again, we should control the fire spread probably. Window is a very important factor in fire spread. Fire can break out of the window and spread into an upper floor by breaking in the upper floor window. This process will repeat and repeat again until the whole building is on fire. The size of window can affect the ventilation factor, heat release rate, temperature and heat flux of the external flame. This study aims to study how window size can limit the fire spread in multi-storey buildings by simulating three models with three different window sizes to evaluate the effect of window size on the external flame. The results from this study will be used to provide suggestions and safety guidance to the design of a multi-storey building, in order to prevent façade fire hazard. | en_US |
