Abstract: The application of photovoltaic (PV) system is a promising way to reduce the fossil fuels use and to solve the global warming. This study simulated the rooftop PV system applied in the Pao Yue-Kong library of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University by the simulation tool, Ecotect, this analysis mainly included the technic aspect and financial aspect. In technical analysis, a three-dimension model of Pao Yue-Kong library and its surrounding buildings was built to review the shading effect conducted on the rooftop area of this library, and it was found that the shading areas in four seasons were around 7.10%, 0.44%, 7.10%, 19.75%, respectively, and then this study simulated the installation of PV panels based on the shading analysis to calculate solar radiation reached on the PV panels and to estimate electricity output of mono-Si PV system and poly-Si system, it could be found that the monthly values of solar radiation and electricity generation of a year presented the similar pattern, the total monthly solar radiation was highest in the October which was 221116.64 kWh, and this value was lowest in the February which was 89822.74 kWh. Both mono-Si PV system and poly-Si also generated more electricity in October comparing with other months which were 36900 kWh and 35500 kWh, respectively. There were lowest electricity output of 14960 kWh and 14400 for the mono-Si PV system and poly-Si PV system, respectively. In the financial aspect, life-cycle economic analysis based on the Net Present Value (NPV) was conducted to estimate the monetary payback, and result was that the cost could be offset for mono-Si PV system after 20.23 years and the economic payback period of poly-Si PV system was around 20.41 years.
