dcterms.abstract | Nowadays most people even spend 90% of their time indoors, so indoor air quality (IAQ) is a very important factor to people's health in modern life. Poor IAQ with high pollutants may lead to discomfort and some health problems such as headaches, respiratory irritation and eye irritation. The worst IAQ usually exist in toilets in an indoor environment. And a toilet may be one of the most often used room in a building. So it is necessary to achieve good IAQ in toilets. This study aims to investigate the IAQ of university public toilets. After assessing the IAQ in two female toilets in the library of Hong Kong Polytechnic University, find the existing problem and give some proper suggestions to improve the IAQ and prevent odor. Two methods were used in this study, one was objective and the other was subjective. The objective one was by physical measurement, an equipment was used to collect essential data in the target toilets. And a questionnaire survey was also used in the investigation, the responses from people's subjective feelings whether they are satisfied with the IAQ in the toilets. From measurement, the CO₂ concentrations exceeded 1000 ppm in weekdays, both toilets could not meet the "good" level in standard. And from the questionnaire survey, it was found that there was a relationship between the CO₂ concentration and odor in toilets. The most often occur time of odor usually was the same as the time with high concentration of CO₂. The major reason may be the ventilation rate, which was a little lower for the toilets. And the dustbins without lids in toilets also contribute to odors. Despite increasing ventilation rate, some other methods such as installing a little fan in toilets also could help diluting the CO₂ concentration and odor exhausting. Some equipment such as advanced filtration devices may also be implemented in toilet in the future. | en_US |
