Abstract: | Nowadays, energy saving is a worldwide issue while public buildings are concerned as a large energy consumption in the construction industry. The unreasonable design of air conditioning system will cause the occupants thermal discomfort within the space. Meanwhile, it will waste much energy. Thermal comfort evaluation is an important way to detect indoor environmental problems after putting the design into use and to ensure the well-performance of the HVAC system. In Hong Kong, as many public buildings are constructed, the comprehensive thermal comfort evaluation becomes a must. However, the studies on public buildings in Hong Kong were few, especially on the university libraries which have the specific function for use and has the certain age characteristics group. This study mainly focuses on the thermal comfort evaluation of the Pao Yue-Kong Library in The Hong Kong Polytechnic University with two dominant objectives. One was using comprehensive methods to evaluate the thermal comfort of the study spaces in the school library during the transition season, including the performance of the air conditioning system, the impacts of draft sensation on thermal sensation and the determination of optimum indoor environmental parameters in transition season. Another was to analyze the applicability of PMV model in Hong Kong area by investigating the gap between the results' of calculated value and occupants subjective feelings. The results of this study show that the air conditioning system in the library was stable but has the problem of vertical imbalance. And the impacts of air speed on other parameters are huge but those areas which have dampers and large-sized space can release these impacts. The draft sensation can influence the occupants' perceptional feelings about their study space. The optimum environmental parameters in transition season are 24.2°C for air temperature, 24.3°C for mean radiant temperature, 51.4% for relative humidity and 0.185 m/s for air velocity. PMV value and PPD value underestimate the impacts of draft sensation on occupants thermal satisfaction. The accuracy of the PMV model on predicting the space thermal comfort at particularly high or particularly low air speed will go down. |
