dcterms.abstractWith the advent of the research assessment exercise, universities are being evaluated in terms of their research performance, and consequentially funding decisions are made to distribute resources to faculties, departments and academic staff. With this background, research output has become increasingly important, which determines funding, tenure and promotion decisions in universities. After reviewing the literature in research assessment exercise, research performance and academic leadership, and research assessment measures, a study was proposed to answer the research question of what academic research is, what good research is, and the habits and routine behaviors of doing good research. Based on a constructivist grounded theory guided approach, an exploratory, qualitative study using face-to-face interviews was conducted with thirty-six academics in the field of hospitality and tourism management, from six academic institutions in Hong Kong. From the data-driven content analyses, an emerging framework was developed. The findings from the emerging framework suggest academic research and good research are subject to environmental and cultural influences, and the ultimate goal is about knowledge creation and making a contribution to the field, teaching, practice and the society at large. Consistency of interests and perseverance of efforts are important factors contributing to doing good research. These are influenced by six career making drivers, and the practicing of five good habits and twenty-seven routine behaviors. Seven propositions were developed to shed light to our understanding and add to the knowledge in this area. Recommendations were made to academics, doctoral students, university administrators and department heads, as well as on theory building and bridging the industry-academia gap. Further research in the form of a tentative research program was suggested.en_US
