Abstract: Effective and efficient banking systems have become increasingly necessary for competitive reasons. The purpose of this dissertation is to develop an expert system which can facilitate bank manager's decision for disbursement of fund. After the credit approval (e.g. a loan) and before the disbursement of fund (e.g. drawdown of the loan) , bank manager has to ensure the compliance of securing documentation and other requirements in relation to credit terms agreed between the customer and the bank. Such review process is particularly vital when the bank manager has to make the decision for fund disbursement (after which the bank may be in a difficult position to rectify the discrepancies found). The main objectives of this project are to acquire the expertise of experiended lenders of how to review securing documentation for compliance with the terms of credit facilities, and to codify such expertise into a form usable by an automated system - an expert system called " Disbursement of Fund System (DFS) ". DFS, which will be a knowledge-based decision support system, is expected to be applicable to both personal and corporate banking. The credit administration function of banks is investigated. Expertise knowledge of the writer and some experienced bankers will be acquired. Current legal issues and practices for compliance of securing documentation are taken into account. After identifying the problem domain of the study, a prototype of an expert system is developed. The prototype will be tested before the implementation. DFS can function as a standalone system or can be in conjunction with other banking systems, mainframe or otherwise. The motivation factors for this study are its pioneer nature and the potential benefits provided by the system for bank management.
