dcterms.abstract | This research project is practice-based with theoretical assistance. The aim of this project is to incorporate knit surface textures into structured garment designs in order to deviate from conventional knit fabrics and garments. This project consists of four main parts, including: (i) a review of surface textures in creative fields and innovative applications of knit surface textures; (ii) a design process model of the innovative surface texture development and design criteria of this project; (iii) the development of the Knit Surface Texture Technical Design Framework (KSTF) and the determination of the parameters for applied techniques; and (iv) the application of KSTF and design processes in prototype creation and fashion garment design. This research project provides both theoretical and practical concepts for academia and the industry. The theoretical research provides the basis for this practice-based project, and the practical exploration experimentally applies knit surface textures to structured garment designs. Surface texture has been recently defined as the entire surface performance of garments achieved by means of manipulating materials. A new classification of surface textures in fashion and textile design has also been developed, which involves the innovative application of knit surface textures. The conventional features of knitting and knitwear have been reviewed, and the application of knit surface textures in structured garment designs provided the breakthrough for this innovative application. A design process model for innovative surface texture development was therefore developed as the methodological framework for this research project. This research project develops Knit Surface Textured Technical Design Framework (KSTF) that includes Loop Formation, Reinforced Composite and Shrinkage Stabilization. The mechanical performance such as the tensile property, compressional property, and surface property of samples made by using KSTF have been examined. Three groups of prototypes have been developed to implement the proposed design process model and KSTF. Prototypes present different types of knit surface textures and the applicable properties for structured garment design. A fashion design collection with six outfits has been developed as the creative outcome to conform to the requirements of practice-based research. This project reveals the future potential for diversifying fashion and textile design through the use of KSTF. Three technical design solutions involve surface retreatment which can create new possibilities for fashion design. Also, these designs cater to the different demands of the market requirements and use sustainable fashion design principles. | en_US |
