Design and implementation of a wireless A-mode PDA-based ultrasound measurement deviceen_US
Ultrasound diagnostic scanning has commonly been used for early detection of fetal abnormalities. Both patients and physicians enjoy the advantages of non-invasive diagnosis methods. It is believed that if the size of the scanning machine is less bulky and more portable and if it can maintain the accuracy in collecting the diagnostic data, its efficiency, flexibility and accuracy of measurement can be improved. Therefore, in this project, an A-mode wireless ultrasound probe was designed and a Palm was used for the backend processing. The aim is to develop an A-mode ultrasonic probe and merge wireless to a Palm device together to form an easy-to-use handheld scanner for the measurement of thickness and stiffness of tissues. Regarding the wireless ultrasound probe, a PIC MCU was used in the probe and the EmbeddedBlue TM eb500 was for the Bluetooth UART which helped transfer data to the Palm. A password was needed to enter before connecting the Bluetooth modules and the Palm, which prevented the data from disclosing to unauthorized persons. The collected data can be saved inside the Palm for future use. The file was in PDB format and it could be recognized by any Palm device. The program can run not only in Palm T5 but also in Palm TX PDA. After the construction of the prototype, some experiments were conducted on phantoms to test the device performance. The ultrasound and force information were recorded during the experiment for future use. The thickness and the elasticity of the specimen were calculated. The results demonstrated that the current system was capable of handling the A-mode operation. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to use PDA and Bluetooth link for constructing an ultrasound measurement device. Future studies should be conducted to further improve the device by increasing the ultrasound frame rate, improving the user-interface, and adding more functions.en_US
