Abstract: | Business English is an important branch of English for Specific Purposes, and it combines English language and technical knowledge in business industry. To present a business world to language learners, videos have been widely used in business English classes, but most of the time they are chosen out of intuition and convenience. The current research analyzed a video used in business English class in light of Systemic Functional Linguistics. By comparing visual meaning of the images and verbal meaning of the conversation in the video, the meaning pattern of the video is revealed. Visual images and verbal conversation coordinate to make meanings when they repeat or elaborate or complement each in the video. By combining the visual meanings and verbal meanings, a few business principles can be uncovered. As a result, the current research not only offers video material designers with methods to evaluate a video, but also provides teachers with guidelines to deconstruct a business video in class. |
