A study of the social benefits of built heritage conservation : a case of Hong Kongen_US
Government and policy makers have started concerning to get balance between urban development and heritage conservation. Accurate evaluation on economic and social value of built heritage conservation (BHC) lead to effective decision on demolishing or preserving the built heritage. However, little research has been done to explore the effective way for evaluating social value of built heritage conservation. Architectural and built heritage are the main focus in this research. The research introduces and investigates the social values and benefits generated by built heritage conservation in Hong Kong. A critical review was conducted to identify social values, obstacles and current mechanisms of built heritage conservation in Hong Kong. Different types of social capital and social benefits are investigated through two case studies which included Queen's Pier and The Blue House Cluster in Hong Kong. The applicability of social capital on these two cases is investigated through Questionnaire and in depth interviews with some professionals. The reasons of willingness to pay of respondents are identified in order to evaluate the significance of built heritage to the public. The results indicate that different factors may affect the social value and benefits of built heritage conservation. The findings are valuable and have significant implications for government and policy makers to make redevelopment or conservation decisions on built heritage in Hong Kong.en_US
